Ancient & Modern Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่)
Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่) is known for its tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of the Buddha. It is a city in mountainous northern Thailand. Founded in 1296, its Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center. It’s also home to hundreds of elaborate Buddhist temples, including 14th-century Wat Phra Singh and 15th-century Wat Chedi Luang, adorned with carved serpents. Despite the modernity of the city, ode, the historic center of Chiang Mai still feels overwhelmingly residential, more like a sleepy country town or village, than a bustling capital. If you drive in a straight line in any direction, you'll soon find yourself in the lush green countryside and pristine rainforests dotted with churning waterfalls, serene wát (temple complexes) and peaceful country villages – as well as a host of markets and elephant sanctuaries.
Thai Art & Culture
The culture and arts of Thailand—as well as Southeast Asia as a whole—have been influenced by India and to a lesser extent China as well as by ancient civilization in Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Malaysia and Indonesia. Perhaps the two greatest influences on Thai culture are Buddhism and The Ramakien (the Thai version of the Indian epic, the Ramayana). Many elements from the Indian-Hindu tradition hold a high place in the Thai arts. Garuda, for example, features prominently in painting and sculpture. Known as Raja Krut in Thai, it is the mystical man-bird and mount of the Hindu god Vishnu. It has been said that Thai architecture is Thailand’s most developed art form. Traditional Thai art and craft ranges from paintings and musical instruments to beautiful silk, silver wear, pottery, puppets, Khon masks, model warships, bronze wear, soap carving, sculptures, wood and stone carvings, ceramics and much more. Modern art in Thailand emerged with Silpakorn University Silpakorn University was founded in 1943 by Professor Silpa Bhirasri, it started as School of Fine Arts which was since then grew to become University.

What is Mischtechnik. Grisaille and Brunaille?
Mischtechnik is
Grisaille is a painting technique in which an artist uses a monochromatic palette in greys, or similar neutral grey colors to build an image ( in Brunaille it is done in browns - we will be doing one of each ). Historically, some artists used the technique to make a model from which to base an engraving. Others used the technique because they preferred the monochromatic look. Still others used it as the foundation for layering oil paint colors on top of one another to create their oil painting. The effect can be quite stunning in and of itself, you can use Grisaille on one panel and Brunaille on your second panel as an underpainting and then layer colors over it to create your final work. Monochromatic painting has several benefits. It can be cost-effective as you’re only using shades of one color. It helps with painting over in color as you the grey tints and shades can be easily worked over. In addition, one only focuses on light and shade without any concern for color, making the painting process less complex and arduous.
